Ladan and Laleh Bijani: The Brave Iranian Twins Who Fought for Separate Lives in Singapore

This article is about the conjoin twins who were separated although died instantly after successful operation in Singapore. I am referring to Ladan and Laleh Bijani.

Introduction

 A Bond Like No Other

Close-up showing their unique connection – two distinct lives sharing one destiny.

Ladan and Laleh Bijani were extraordinary Iranian sisters, born on January 17, 1974, physically joined at the base of their skull—a rare condition known as craniopagus twins. For 29 years, they shared one body but possessed completely separate minds, distinct personalities, and hearts filled with different dreams. While their bond was unbreakable, their greatest wish was simple yet incredibly risky: to live as two separate people. Their journey led them to Singapore, where they made global headlines—and where their story ended in both tragedy and timeless courage.

Ladan & Laleh – Full of Hope

Though connected at the head, Ladan and Laleh were never the same person. They had separate brains, separate thoughts, and separate goals for their future.

Ladan was strong-willed and ambitious, dreaming of becoming a lawyer to fight for justice.

Laleh was gentler and creative, with a deep desire to work as a journalist and tell stories of the world.

They studied law together in Tehran, lived together, and made every step of life side-by-side—although, they longed for the freedom to choose their own paths. “We want to see each other face to face, not through a mirror,” Ladan once said. They wanted to walk alone, to dress differently, to live a life that was truly their own.

The Big Decision - Choosing Risk Over Certainty

How Ladan & Laleh Were Joined

Medical diagram explaining their condition: separate brains but shared critical blood vessels in one skull.

The surgery was far more complex than anyone had imagined. While their brains were separate, they shared a major vein—the superior sagittal sinus—that carried blood away from their brains. If this vessel was damaged, it would cause fatal bleeding.

Surgeons planned a delicate solution: they would take a vein graft from one of their legs to build new, separate pathways for blood flow. On July 6, 2003, the operation began. It stretched into an exhausting 53-hour marathon, with over 24 specialists working in shifts to carefully separate bone, tissue, and blood vessels. The world watched and waited, hoping for a miracle.

The Medical Challenge and Surgery

Speaking to the World

Doctors around the world had long warned them: separating would be extremely dangerous, with a high chance both could die. But the twins refused to give up. After years of searching, they found hope at Raffles Hospital in Singapore, where a team of top specialists agreed to take on the challenge in 2003. Photo Source: The Telegraph India

Facing the press, they spoke with calm courage: “We know the risks. But it is better to die trying to live like normal people than to spend our whole lives stuck together like this.” It was not a choice made lightly—it was a choice for dignity and the right to shape their own fate.

Tragic Ending: A Dream Unfulfilled

Final Farewell – Prayer Service

The physical separation was completed—but the body could not recover from the trauma. Both women suffered severe, unstoppable blood loss, followed by organ failure. Ladan passed away shortly after successful separation first on the morning of July 8, 2003. Just hours later, Laleh, too, slipped away.

The news broke around the globe, bringing shock and deep sorrow. What had begun as a story of hope became a heartbreaking lesson in the fragility of life. Tributes poured in from leaders, doctors, and ordinary people—all moved by how bravely they had fought for their freedom.
